About me

John F. Schaffner
After a life-time career in newspaper journalism, and with no intention to ever "retire," I launched BuckheadView, an online news site covering news of interest and importance to residents of Atlanta's Buckhead community.

Although I have only lived in Buckhead since 2007, I have covered the area as a community newspaper editor since 2006. And, as Managing Editor of The Atlanta Constitution in the late '70s and early '80s, I was integrally involved in the editorial coverage of the entire metro area.

My newspaper career began in the early '60s, when I joined the St. Petersburg Times fresh from Florida State University. In the years that followed, I moved from there to The Palm Beach Post and then to The Philadelphia Inquirer prior to joining The Constitution in 1977.

The career that I loved was interrupted in 1983, when The Constitution and Journal editorial staffs were merged--and I left in one of the first large reductions in force at the newspaper.

For the next 20 years, I moved over to public relations, first as Senior Vice President of A. Brown Olmstead Associates, and then as owner of my own firm, Corporate Image Group. Although I made a living in P.R., I never stopped being a newspaper journalist at heart. When the opportunity came to move into community newspapers in 2001, first at The Story and then at The Sandy Springs, Buckhead and Brookhaven Reporter newspapers, I jumped.

In the 10 years since then, I have attended nearly every major community meeting and event in the areas I have covered. If you know me, you know I tell it like I see it... and that may cause discomfort for some.  But you never have to wonder where I stand.

BuckheadView is basically me... with some valuable technical help from my wife, Karen. That means you will find the occasional typo or misspelled word. Please forgive them, and know that I'm much more diligent in fact-checking than I am in copyediting.

Look for me at Buckhead community meetings, and let me know how BuckheadView can become more valuable to you. Or email me at buckheadview@gmail.com
